Derby rocks & Thunder rolls

A new roller derby team is coming up strong in Huntington, helping to revive a decades-old sport. The Rolling Thunder Dames are an all female, flat track team that joined the West Virginia derby community in 2013.
This year will be their first bout season, with the first game being March 7. The Thunder Dames was founded on sisterhood and promoting inner growth along with being active in the community. According to co-captain Raven Vixen, “RTD is a group of strangers who’ve come together to become a part of my family.” Member No Manners said “We are sisters more than teammates.”
The Dames are comprised of various backgrounds including college students, teachers, housewives, business owners and healthcare professionals ranging from 18-50 years old. Many women, including the Dames’ very own Kit-Kat Bone Krusher, believes “derby is an escape from reality and a break, no pun intended.”
Currently there are four home bouts scheduled for the Dames this year, with the venue pending. The team said they are open to offers. The Dames will also be going to Morgantown to play against the Morgantown Roller Vixens and taking part in the West Virginia Statewide Tournament.
This group of diverse women are interested in showing the community what roller derby is about. They are also interested in getting to know the community, not only at the bouts, but by participating in area events. The team has been seen at multiple parades, 5Ks and other events. The team is currently working on fundraisers and more ways to be involved with the community this coming year.
Derby is a tough sport and these are tough girls. This team is a family and are welcoming anyone who would like to come learn about roller derby or join. Barberella believes that you will fall in love with derby your very first day. The team practices at Skateland in Altizer.
