Song of the Day: ‘Cloak and Cipher’ by Land of Talk
I first learned about Land of Talk from NPR’s “All Songs Considered.” My ears perked up when the group was described as a female-fronted Sparklehorse, with roots in folk and rock.
I like folk and rock. I like Sparklehorse. So I bought Land of Talk’s sophomore release, “Cloak and Cipher.” The comparison is apt, and not in sound only.
“Cloak and Cipher,” like Sparklehorse’s “Dark Night of The Soul,” is one filled with collaborations. Appearing on “Cloak and Cipher” are members from Stars, Arcade Fire, Thee Silver Mt. Zion, Besnard Lakes and more.
Still, this is primarily lead singer and guitarist Elizabeth Powell’s record, as heard on the album’s lead and title track, which I’ve attached here for your enjoyment.
