Song of the Day: ‘Let’s Go Surfing’ by The Drums
I’m heading to the beach tomorrow so naturally I’ve been listening to surf music out the wazoo. Fortunately, there’s been an explosion of indie acts redefining this sound with layers of reverb and harmony.
Take The Drums, for instance. With influences more along the lines of Joy Division, The Cure and The Smiths, and a home base in Brooklyn, N.Y., this is about the last band you’d expect to come out with a single called "Let’s Go Surfing."
Maybe it’s inauthentic, disingenuous, captialistic. Whatever. All I know is when the refrain from an old jump rope song — "Down down baby, down by the roller coaster; sweet, sweet baby I’ll never let you go" — kicks in, I’m singing along and looking for my Vans and wayfarers.
