Song of the Day: ‘Come as You Are,’ by The Mammals

By Staff | Jul 14, 2010

For whatever reason, we’re always attracted to covers of popular songs that are in genres far different from the original tune.

A folk band covering Britney Spears? Classic.

Jam bands covering Snoop Dogg? Love it.

So, when we heard this modern bluegrass cover of Nirvana’s "Come as You Are," we were thrilled, even if the bluegrass elements of The Mammals’ typical fare is downplayed a little.

The rest of The Mammals’ album, "Departure," continues along in that vein of modern rock song structures played with bluegrass instruments.

But it’s when the harmonica ends "Come as You Are," with a plaintive, mournful solo, and the melancholy is upped to 11 that we’re reminded why we love these covers so much. You can learn a lot about a song through someone else’s eyes.

That Britney Spears cover of "Toxic," made us think, if even for just a moment, that the song’s actually not that bad.
