Song of the Day: ‘Mermaid Parade’ by Phosphorescent

By Staff | Jun 9, 2010

Phosphorescent, the indie folk/alt country band fronted by Matthew Houck, first caught our eye with 2005’s "Aw Come Aw Wry," a beautifully constructed album comprised largely of breakup tunes and personal journal entries.

A spare, intimate album filled with delicately plucked banjos and acoustic guitars — and often nothing else —  "Aw Come Aw Wry," was one of those albums discovered at the right time and the right place.

When last year’s "To Willie," came out — a collection of Willie Nelson covers — well, we were forever hooked.

This year’s album, "Here’s to Taking It Easy," is the most polished and crisp Phosphorescent have ever sounded. It’s clear the band is more than just Matthew Houck. And, thankfully, none of this is a detriment. These tunes are real gems.

The track posted here, "The Mermaid Parade," features steel and electric guitar and talks of the dissolution of a long-distance relationship. You know, the perfect topic for country music.
