Calling Dungeon Masters! Visit Four Horsemen Comics and Gaming
In 2016, Stranger Things debuted and sparked a renewed public interest in Dungeons and Dragons. This tabletop role-playing game system was first released in 1974, gaining significant popularity in the 1980s. During that period, it became a catalyst for the Satanic Panic of the era, which drove it underground for a time. But even when role-playing games have been the source of controversy, they have remained popular. And Four Horsemen Comics and Gaming has been there to make sure people have the space and opportunity to gather and have fun together.
The store is located in the Morgantown Mall and hosts various events throughout the week. Graffiti spoke with Kaleb Davis, the Trading Card manager at Four Horsemen. He explained that there is always something cooking at the store. “It kind of spans day-to-day as to what we are doing. Tonight is Magic: The Gathering. Tomorrow, it could be Pokémon. It could be Yu-Gi-Oh after that. We have a calendar of events that people can come to play in our back area. We honestly just tried to make the space as welcoming and inviting as it possibly can be.”
In addition to regular weekly gaming sessions, Four Horsemen hosts special events. One upcoming event is the Magic: The Gathering Marvel Spider-Man Pre-Release on September 20th at 6:00 PM. There is a $50 registration fee that allows players to receive the sealed pre-release kit, which includes six unopened booster packs from which they can build a deck. Prizes will be awarded, and all participants will receive one pack just for playing. You can register for this on their Facebook page or their website.
If you’re new to gaming, don’t worry! Kaleb assured us that there are people available to help you learn the ropes. “We have organizers, either community members who are well-trusted or staff members here, and they can sit down and teach you how to play. We have certain nights that are kind of like an open table, where you can come with friends. Or we could introduce you to a table of people, and just get you meshing with the community.”
Even if you’re not into gaming, Four Horsemen Comics and Gaming wants to be a welcoming space to everyone. Kaleb told us, “On most days, our back area is free to use. So, even if you aren’t gaming, you can come in and just use us as a hangout spot. We think of ourselves more as a community help than we do a gaming store. We’re definitely closer to a clubhouse atmosphere. And then a business sometimes. Everyone’s welcome. We just tried to provide the best space that we can.”
