By Staff | Mar 25, 2008

Here’s a quick rundown of some recently released trade paperbacks. Each is available now and definitely worth a look.

• Avengers: Initiative Vol. 1 — Basic Training (Marvel).  Spinning out of Marvel’s “Civil War,” this new Avengers series focuses on a group of young recruits undergoing intensive superhero training with the hopes of joining the government-sponsored Initiative.

• Batman: The Killing Joke Deluxe Hardcover (DC). This classic from Alan Moore and Brian Bolland is the definitive take on the Joker’s origin and one of the finest Batman stories ever told. Sure to be an influence on the upcoming film, “The Killing Joke” finally gets the deluxe package it deserves and is a must for every collection.

• Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall (DC/Vertigo).  This companion piece to Bill Willingham’s award-winning monthly series features short stories from some of the finest artists in the business and is now available in softcover. (Mature Readers)

• Infinite Crisis (DC). Just in time for the “Final Crisis” set to explode this summer comes this collection of the monumental 2005 mini-series that redefined the modern DC Universe.

• Lobo: Portrait of a Bastich (DC). What began as a spoof of the violent antiheros of the early 1990s became a phenomenon of its own that set new standards for over-the-top mayhem. Now the Main Man’s first two long out-of-print mini-series are collected in a single volume.

• Spider-Man: Reign (Marvel). Borrowing motifs from Frank Miller’s seminal Batman tale “The Dark Knight Returns,” writer/artist Kaare Andrews presents a bleak vision of Spider-Man’s future as a broken-down old man forced to don his costume and face some of his worst villains one final time.

• Wormwood, Gentleman Corpse Vol. 2 — It Only Hurts When I Pee (IDW).  The second volume of “30 Days of Night” artist Ben Templesmith’s twisted horror/comedy follows the adventures of a corpse-possessing worm and his pals as they escape world-destroying squid monsters and cross-dressing leprechauns. (Mature Readers)
