Super, Without the Heroes

By Staff | Feb 29, 2008

Vertigo, DC Comics’ mature readers imprint, has a long history of smart and sophisticated books aimed at the non-superhero crowd. Classics like “Sandman,” “Preacher” and “Y the Last Man” built Vertigo’s reputation and these current titles are helping to continue the tradition.

American Virgin Vol. 3 — Wet.  Evangelical youth minister Adam Chamberlain is the celebrity face of a popular abstinence movement, but when his girlfriend is brutally murdered during an African missions trip he’s thrown into a harrowing world of violence and temptation.

Crossing Midnight Vol. 2 — A Map of Midnight. Creator Mike Carey explores the mysterious intersections of Japan’s modern life and ancient folklore in this series about a teenager searching for a twin sister who’s been drawn into an invisible kingdom of magic and demons.

DMZ Vol. 3 — Public Works. In the Manhattan of the near-future, rookie photojournalist Matty Roth must navigate the once-familiar streets in what is now a demilitarized zone after the United States has been rocked by a second Civil War.

Fables Vol. 9 — Sons of Empire. The most critically acclaimed of the current Vertigo crop, writer Bill Willingham continues his fractured fairy tale about storybook characters living modern lives and overcoming old grudges amidst us in the mundane world.

Hellblazer: Joyride. Andy Diggle’s run on Vertigo’s flagship title has cleaned up hard-traveling magician John Constantine and put him back on the offensive against the spirits that threaten London.

100 Bullets Vol. 11 — Once Upon a Crime. The long-running series by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso continues to set new standards in crime comics as the labyrinthine plot about the shadowy Agent Graves and his maneuverings against his former organization keep unfolding.

Scalped Vol. 2 — Casino Boogie. Fresh talents Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera present this promising new series about FBI Special Agent Dashiell Bad Horse as he returns home undercover to the Prairie Rose Indian Reservation and the organized crime lords who run it.
