Marshall Artist Series keeps great entertainment going for 82 years

By Richard Allen , Graffiti

The Marshall Artist Series, an entertainment staple in Huntington since 1936, recently announced their 82nd season. The season, which has proven to be one of their most ambitious yet, features comedic legends Steve Martin and Martin Short, musical icon Brian Wilson accompanied by two original members of The Beach Boys celebrating the 50th anniversary of their seminal masterpiece Pet Sounds, multi-platinum recording artists Barenaked Ladies, and more.

Along with celebrated cultural icons, there will be a variety of events and performers sure to cater toward even the most eclectic of tastes. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin will be discussing her new book "Leadership in Turbulent Times," which combines storying telling with lessons from four of our nation's presidents; two-time Grammy Award winner Gregory Porter, heavily influenced by the music of Nat "King" Cole, will be performing selections off his latest studio album Nat "King" Cole & Me. National tours of Broadway hits Jersey Boys, based on the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons; Evita, which chronicles the rise and fall of one of the world's most glamorous first ladies, Eva Peron; Rogers and Hammerstein's beloved classic and Tony Award-winning fairytale Cinderella; and Rock of Ages, a musical tour-de-force featuring the songs of Styx, Twisted Sister, Poison, and more currently on tour celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Other events include Breakfast at Tiffany's In Concert, a showing of the classic film with accompaniment by a live symphony orchestra; The Banff Film Festival, featuring the world's best mountain sport, culture and environmental films; and the always well attended Spring and Fall International Film Festivals which will be showing "RBG," "A Fantastic Woman," "The Insult," "Loveless," "Back to Burgundy," "Angels Wear White," "The China Hustle," "The Guilty," "Daughter of Mine," "The Desert Bride," "I Am Not A Witch," and "The Nile Hilton Incident".

The Marshall Artist Series means more to the community than just a form of entertainment. "We believe that the performing arts are vital to an incredible heritage," said Penny Watkins, Executive Director of the Marshall Artist Series. "At 82 years old, The Marshall Artist Series is more than Arts and Education. We annually create 600 seasonal jobs, bring educational opportunities to over 6,000 school children through our performances, and we generate a $2 million footprint in the community. We are proud to service our city and state's economy." Watkins also boasted that the series has, "over 7,500 Marshall University students attend free of charge our performances each year."

Season pass tickets are available by calling 304-696-3326. There are many different tiers of tickets and different events included in each tier. For those interested in all events, a Superpass can be bought. Individual tickets will go on sale on Monday, September 10th, 2018.
