It's February and you know what that means. The upcoming holiday is welcomed by card makers and dreaded by singles. Don't fret if you don't have a partner. Remember, February 14 is also the day of cheap chocolates in heart-shaped boxes with doilies glued on top, flash frozen lobster tails and crab cakes with way too much salt. St. Valentine's Day is also known as Valentine's Forever Alone Day. What the heck is that supposed to mean?
When we're born, we are alone, when we die we're alone, and even when we're in a relationship it can feel like we're alone. So if we're coming here and leaving the planet all alone, in the grand scheme of things, being alone isn't too shabby. There's gotta be some alone time. There's no need to shudder when you think about being single on this commercialized day geared for lovers ready to open their wallets and buy stuffed teddy bears with hearts on their bellies the words 'You're beary sweet.'
I'm alone, but I'm never lonely. It's better to be alone than be in relationship with someone who is a bad kisser and has stinky feet, that's for sure. So if you are single, take this day to celebrate your singleness, your awesomeness and your aloneness. Give yourself a big kiss in the mirror. And appreciate your life. Actually, I bet you've got plenty to be thankful for. I've got a list of some really positive aspects of being single.
1.No expensive dinners.
You don't have to buy any overpriced dinners for two in some fancy restaurant. And you won't have to wait in line for over an hour, then wait for your server for 20 more minutes to order. Eventually you'd start to wonder if the chef got mad and threw your ticket in the trash. After about two more hours you would finally get some cold food that was supposed to be hot on your table and into your mouth.
2.No crappy relationships
You don't have to fight the blue hairs in the card store and there will be no cards that say "We are meant to be together, forever" when you're actually thinking, "THIS is my punishment?"
3.No expected presents
You are under no obligation to buy heart-shaped diamond necklaces or boxers embroidered with hearts, red lips and the words "Stephanie and Jim."
You don't have to worry about preparing a speech and proclaiming your love. When you're single, there is no pressure about popping the big question just because you've been dating someone for a year.
5.You are not dead
You're still breathing aren't you? That's something to be thankful for right now. You're single, you're alive and you are free. There are people who have died for the cause of freedom so, really, you've got nothing to complain about.
6.No checking in
You can go wherever you want, whenever you want. You can stay out till 2 a.m., and not have any repercussions, except the fact that you're probably totally dehydrated and you spent your last 50 bucks. Not to mention that you'll lose a full day of being productive and your head will feel like it's been run over by a dump truck. But that's a topic for another time.
7.The possibilities are endless.
Being single is your ticket to creating a life that you truly love. You can learn to be your best self, all by yourself. There are billions of people in the world, and a lot of them are single and happy.
Valentine's Day isn't just a special day for couples. Valentine's Day is for everyone, even single people. Make Valentine's Day YOUR day!
