Song of the Day: 'Cumberland Gap' by Robert Byrd

July 28, 2010
Graffiti

At this point, I thought nearly everyone knew about the late Robert Byrd's musical career. But apparently not.

Since his passing, Byrd's "Mountain Fiddler" album has been sitting on my desk and the number of co-workers who pass by commenting that they didn't know he played the fiddle was astounding.

So here's a taste for those of you out there who still don't know: this self-taught musician can jam.

Recorded in 1977, Byrd made this album with the popular bluegrass band The Country Gentlemen. It was well-received and even led to considerable publicity for Byrd.
