Something Appropriate

POSTED:Mon, August 4, 2008 @ 1:12PM

My Shed Band

When i was in college in Morgantown I lived in a tiny 10-by-44 trailer on the stadium side of town off of Van Voohris. My friends and i were always playing music, but never had practice space. So i had this unabomber-style metal shed outside i decided to utilize. It was a fairly big one for the record. We were a bit squished, but four people could fit in.
We lined the walls with whatever we could find to try and soundproof it as best we could and covered all that with pages of Rolling Stone to make it look more band-like. I just ran a heavy-duty extension cord from the trailer and put a power strip in there.
The drums were in the corner, and very hard to get to. The bass stack beside that and guitar amps stacked and squeezed wherever I could fit them.  It was best to use one accoustic  for the sake of space. We had one mic, and ran that through an old keyboard amp. I generally took the lawnmower out before we stared playing.Yes, of course it was sweltering in the summer and frozen in the winter (winter was better though because all the sound proofing helped with insulation. once we started playing and warmed up it was ok.) But just being able to play as a group was worth it.
Comparing it to the space i have now, I don't think any of us would have finished college if we could play where we play no back then. I think that is one of the two biggest hold-ups for young bands. SPACE and DECENT EQUIPMENT.
I'm not just writing about it to fill up my allotment of blogging (wouldn't even think about it.) But because i dug up some old tapes and computer tracks we recorded of ourselves and they are fantastic. Not in the good way of course, but you know. What we lacked in talent we made up in enthusiasm. If only that was enough to make it listen-able...
