The Last Unicorn - Peter S. BeagleA special 40th anniversary edition of a fantasy classic, "The Last Unicorn" by Peter S. Beagle, has been released. The book includes illustrations by Mel Grant that add to the mystical flavor of the book. A beautiful unicorn, Amalthea, is afraid that she has become the last of her kind, perhaps taken by the dangerous Red Bull. When the unicorn is captured and made a circus sideshow amusement, she meets the magician Schmendrick who helps in her escape. The unicorn has heard that King Haggard may have something to do with the unicorns' disappearance, and sets off for his kingdom along with Schmendrick. But as they meet friends along their journey, they also meet powerful enemies, and the unicorn learns how terrible and old the Red Bull really is. When magic transforms the unicorn into a human, they, along with their new friend Molly, travel to Haggard in the guise of a courtly lady and her magician guardian. There they meet the King and his handsome son, Prince Lir, who falls in love with the Lady Amalthea. And the longer the unicorn stays Lady Amalthea, the more she forgets her true form. Will she ever remember her real life and solve the mystery of her people? This is a beautiful and delicate fantasy, much like the unicorn herself. Fans of the old cartoon movie will enjoy reading the story, and anyone who loves fairy tales should give this classic a read. "The Last Unicorn" 40th anniversary edition will be released July 1. It is published by Roc. It is $14.95 and 212 pages long.
